If you want to capture your Holiday parties a bit differently this year, choosing the right lens can give your photos a new perspective, whether it’s for a super-wide angle or retro look, or for intimate portraits.
Original Effects
Do you want to include the entire New Year’s Eve table in one image? Whether you use an SLR camera or a smartphone, try a fish-eye lens. You can shoot from any angle without ever having to back up. Watch out for your fingers, feet and shadow, however. They’re easy to include in the photo!
For a retro look, use a Lomography lens. You can create a slightly overexposed look; a warm, somewhat desaturated look; or an instant-photo look… there’s a style to please everyone! Depending on the type of device and lens you use, you may need an adapter.
Essential Allies
One of the main challenges during the Holidays is to shoot in low light. Using a lens that can capture more light and expose your photos properly will help. In technical terms, use a lens with an aperture of at least f2.8 or larger. Intense conversations, complicit smiles, surprised expressions: these are all moments you don’t want to miss! A telephoto lens can be very useful for zooming in from a distance without affecting the quality of your photos or disturbing the spontaneity of your subjects!
Filters
A new lens isn’t cheap. Colour filters can provide an economical and effective alternative. By changing the colour balance, they can easily alter the mood of an image. Choose a yellow filter to warm up your portraits or a bluish filter to colour-balance interior light, which is often very warm. If you want to be more artistic, try using a special-effect filter, like one for blurred edges.
