Family, decorations, gifts: there are so many wonderful moments to capture during Christmastime. Don’t want to fiddle around with your large camera? Here are five ways to capture professional-looking pictures with your cellphone and prepare your next Holiday photo album.
Look for light
A lot of pictures are taken indoors at Christmas. Look for brightly lit areas to avoid using your flash as much as possible. Natural light will give a warmer, more festive vibe to your photos. When the light is dim, hold your cellphone very still for a few moments to help it automatically adjust to the level of brightness in darker areas.
Use the HDR setting
When the area’s levels of brightness are uneven, activate your smartphone’s High Dynamic Range setting by selecting the icon in the camera’s toolbar. This will allow the camera to capture different levels of brightness in one picture. Perfect for taking a photo of candles on a table or for photographing a multitude of details, like the ornaments on your Christmas tree.
Seize the moment
The main advantage of taking pictures with your cellphone is that your phone is within reach almost all the time. Great for when there’s a lot going on around you and you want to immortalize it all. Don’t be afraid of taking lots of pictures : you’ll have a lot to choose from when the Holidays are over!
Get close
There’s a million little details that make Christmas magical. Forget the zoom, it reduces the picture’s quality, and get close to your subjects : you’ll capture the subtlety of the expressions… and the intimacy of the moments!
Timing is everything
The secret to a great Christmas photo album is being in the right place at the right time (and, sometimes, using the right app!). Here’s a short list of situations you should definitely try to capture.
Family first
Christmas is one of the rare occasions when the whole family gets together. Take the opportunity to get some group pictures. Want to appear in them too? Get a tripod for your phone, program the self-timer and join the others!
A festive table
Your Christmas dinner setting looks amazing? Before everyone gathers for the meal, take a few quick pictures to immortalize your hosts’ homestaging skills!
Holiday meals
Pictures of food have become extremely popular. And there are no shortages of delicious meals at Christmastime! You’ll be able to share your best shots on social media to wow your friends!
Gifts
Christmas equals presents! Get your cellphone out to capture the joy on faces of children as they unwrap their gifts. These are usually the photos everyone will want to look back on.
