Helpful tips and information every pregnant woman needs to know
Pregnancy is an incredible adventure that begins at the moment of conception, when a sperm fertilizes an egg, and lasts about nine months, or approximately 39 weeks. The process includes significant physical and emotional changes.
50% to 80% of women experience nausea, and 20% have it for more than three months.
Physical symptoms
- Absence of one or more menstrual cycles
- Breasts are larger and harder
- Breasts are sore to the touch
- Breasts are enlarged and darker
- Nausea or vomiting (more frequent at beginning of pregnancy)
- Headaches
- Excess saliva, most often with a first pregnancy
- Metallic taste in mouth
- Heartburn or acid reflux
- Sensitive gums
- Frequent need to urinate
- Painless, odourless white vaginal discharge that may be abundant
- Constipation
- Abdominal pain that feels like menstrual cramps
- Vaginitis (yeast infection)
- Nasal congestion
- Numbness or pain in hands, especially during the third trimester and at night
- Hemorrhoids
- Back pain, especially in the final months of pregnancy
- Acne flare-ups
- Water retention
- Edema (swelling) of ankles, legs or face
- Varicose veins
Emotional symptoms
- Fatigue, especially in the first trimester
- Cravings for or aversions to certain foods
- Sensitivity to certain odours
- Mood swings, irritability and hypersensitivity
- Dizziness
- Sleep problems
Complications
- Miscarriage
- Gestational diabetes
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Preeclampsia or pregnancy-related hypertension
- Preterm labour (before the 37th week of pregnancy)
