Every year, Canadians throw away 3 million tons of plastic waste, only 9% of which is recycled with the majority of ending up in landfills. In partnership with L’Oréal and TerraCycle, customers will be able to recycle their beauty empties in the cosmetics section of select Jean Coutu locations. Once collected, TerraCycle will break down the waste, separate it by material, and convert it into usable recyclable forms.
THE PACKAGING IS SENT TO A SORTING STATION
Your used cosmetics are collected and sent to a TerraCycle facility in Canada for sorting.
OUR PARTNER SEPERATES THEM ACCORDING TO MATERIAL
The packaging is then dismantled and sorted according to the type of material, using various methods including: hand sorting, magnets and air density.
RECYCLABLE MATERIALS ARE RECYCLED INTO RAW FORMAT
The materials are then cleaned and processed into usable recyclable forms. Metals are melted down, glass is crushed and melted, and organic materials are composted. Plastics are reduced in size by shredding and grinding.
THE MATERIAL THEN HAS A SECOND LIFE THANKS TO YOU!
The materials used from your recycled cosmetics are then sent to manufacturers to be re-used and re-purposed.
