Scalp problems: treatment products to rescue your hair

Dry hair, oily hair, dandruff, itchy scalp, premature hair loss... For every type of scalp and hair problem, there’s a care routine with the right products. Here are a few solutions for most common scalp issues.

Problem: I have dandruff (flakes)

Often the cause of an itchy scalp, dandruff is one of the most common hair problems, affecting over 40% of people 30 and over.

These tiny skin flakes can multiply for a number of combined reasons:

  • excess sebum;
  • dry scalp;
  • air pollution;
  • skin irritation;
  • heat or excessive perspiration;
  • dry air (especially in winter);
  • certain inflammatory diseases like psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis;
  • hair treatments that are too intense.

How to solve these problems?

Solution: Selenium sulfide

Dandruff can be treated with the regular use of a medicated shampoo that contains selenium sulfide. What’s more, in addition to treating dandruff, this powerful ingredient also soothes itchy scalp and eliminates visible dry skin.

Apply a generous amount of selenium sulfide shampoo to your scalp at least three times a week, massaging it in and leaving it on for a few minutes, then rinse it off thoroughly. If possible, try applying a conditioner from the same line of products, to avoid cancelling out the anti-dandruff active ingredients in your shampoo.

Dry or oily dandruff?

There are two types of dandruff (dry and oily), each with a different type of treatment. Make sure you identify your type of dandruff so you can choose the most appropriate hair treatment to get rid of your dandruff.

Problem: I’m losing my hair

Did you know that you can lose up to one hundred hairs every day? Usually, that’s not a problem, since new hair grows back to replace what’s lost. However, this balance can be disrupted for a number of reasons:

  • hormonal changes;
  • emotional shock;
  • dietary imbalance;
  • certain types of medication;
  • major temperature swings;
  • a period of intense stress.

When this happens, there’s not enough new hair to make up for the loss.

Solution: An invigorating or concentrated product

Whatever is causing the hair loss, there are ways to fight it (or at least slow down the hair loss) by arming yourself with an invigorating shampoo or a concentrated treatment product to stimulate new hair growth.

This type of product generally acts in three ways:

  1. It maintains good scalp health;
  2. It strengthens your hair fibres;
  3. It makes your hair follicles less vulnerable to external harm.

Reactive or chronic hair loss?

Reactive hair loss affects women more often than men, and is primarily due to environmental or everyday factors like stress, fatigue, illness, pregnancy, etc. Chronic hair loss, on the other hand, affects men more often, and is caused by an increase in dihydrotestosterone, a hormone derived from testosterone. Each type of hair loss is treated in a different way, so speak to your pharmacist to learn more about your particular condition.

Problem: My hair is thinning

Does your hair seem thinner than before? Is the natural part in your hair getting wider? These signs generally point to a loss of density, which is caused by a shortening of the hair’s growth phase, making it thinner and less visible.

This type of scalp problem can be caused by a number of factors:

  • genetic predisposition (heredity);
  • hormonal changes;
  • hair irritation;
  • poor scalp irrigation.

Fortunately, there are a number of proven beauty tricks for styling fine hair and create the illusion that you have thicker hair.

Solution: A fortifying product

Create a haircare routine that uses fortifying, purifying and invigorating products to revitalize and preserve the integrity of your hair, while toning your scalp.

Problem: I have a sensitive scalp

A sensitive scalp means itchy, irritated, stiff hair. This type of sensitivity can be caused by:

  • environmental aggression (pollution, limescale from your shower, UV rays, etc.);
  • stress;
  • excess sebum;
  • cleansing products that don’t meet your skin's needs.

These factors can all lead to oxidation, which is characterized by the production of free radicals affecting your hair follicles, the hair pits where hairs are created and grown.

Solution: gentle, soothing formulas

To fight hair hypersensitivity, it’s recommended that you use gentle shampoos, specifically formulated to soothe and protect your sensitive scalp, reduce inflammation and soothe itching, all while preserving your hair's hydrolipidic film to prevent further sensitivity problems.

Before you use these types of products, make sure you rinse your hair thoroughly to remove any trace of residue.

Following a routine

To help prevent scalp sensitivity, don’t pull too hard on your hair when you’re tying it up in a knot or bun. And make sure you cover your head when you spend time outdoors.

Vichy Dercos Ultra-Soothing Shampoo for Dry Hair, 200 ml

Problem: I have oily hair

Is your hair oily, flat and hard to style? That type of problem is generally due to an overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands at the roots of your hair, causing an accumulation of natural oils.

Several factors might be at play:

  • hormonal changes;
  • stress or fatigue;
  • environmental pollution;
  • nutritional imbalance.
  • use of the wrong styling products.

Good news: fighting greasy hair is easier than you think!

Solution: Light, pH-neutral formulas

Using a light, pH-neutral shampoo is the best way to eliminate the excess sebum that causes oily hair. But don’t use too much at once, and be sure to rinse your hair thoroughly, rubbing it gently to avoid stimulating your sebaceous glands.

You can also treat oily hair two or three times a week by using a purifying and detoxifying green clay mask. In addition to cleaning your scalp thoroughly, green clay is quite good at absorbing oil and balancing its production.

Did you know?

The drying effects of dandruff shampoos can also help control the sebum production. Best of all, you can use this type of product to treat oily hair, even if you don't have dandruff!

Some do's and don'ts to prevent scalp problems

Here are a few other daily tips to keep your scalp and hair looking their best.

To do

Whether you have a dry, normal or oily scalp, you’ll want to avoid overstimulating the production of sebum by washing your hair two to three times a week at the most! Don’t shampoo that often? Here’s your new best friend: dry shampoo! It’s a great way to soak up excess oil from your hair roots to restore volume and lightness to tired, lifeless hair.

To be avoided

Remember, don’t overuse styling products, especially if you apply them close to your hairline (you don’t want that greasy effect!). And don't go to sleep with your hair still damp and wet or you could aggravate your sensitive or inflamed scalp.
