Want to colour your own hair at home but are afraid you’ll mess up? Or maybe you already do your own colouring, but you want to improve your technique? No matter where your head is at, this tutorial is for you!
Prepare
- Start by separating your hair into four sections. First, using a rat-tail comb, create two parts, one that goes from front to back, right down the centre, from your nose to the nape of your neck; then create a second, from ear to ear. Pull the hair in each section together with clips.
Pro tip:
Make sure you do this in front of a mirror, so your separations are clear and your lines straight.
- Prepare your hair dye by following the instructions on the box. If you’re retouching your roots, start by using only a third of the dye, you don’t want the rest to dry out while you’re working on your roots.
Apply
- Cover your roots first, if required, starting with the two sections at the front of your head. Then proceed with one small bunch of strands at a time. The smaller the bunch, the easier it will be to apply the dye everywhere, and that’s crucial if you’re covering gray hair.
Pro tips:
- To find out if the bunch of hair you’ve taken is small enough, try this: if you can read a printed page through the strands, it’s perfect!
- If you’re working on the back of your head, you can use your fingers to ensure that you’re applying the dye everywhere.
- Once the dye has been applied to all your roots, let it sit for 35 to 45 minutes. (Time may vary depending on the amount of gray hair you’re retouching and the contrast between your natural colour and the shade of hair colour you're using.) While you’re waiting, you can mix up the rest!
- Next, move on to the lengths and the tips. Spray on a little fresh water, then apply the freshly mixed dye and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
Pro tip:
Use a detangling comb to spread the dye throughout your hair evenly. Fine-toothed combs will remove the colouring in big globs whereas the detangling comb will separate your strands nicely and ensure the colouring penetrates fully.
Rinse and style
- Remove the excess dye and stop the colouring process by rinsing your hair fully with lukewarm water until the water runs clear.
- Then, all that’s left to do is shampoo, condition and style your hair as usual. Remember, it’s best to use products created for colour-treated hair.
