What’s the best way to get healthy, blemish-free skin? A daily skincare ritual. Check out these four steps for an energizing routine for guys.
1
CLEANSE
Why? Cleansing your skin morning and night is essential to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and allow your face to breathe. It’s the first step in all good skincare rituals!
Beware: While many of us tend to skip cleansing at night, it’s an important step to remove the sweat, sebum and dirt that build up over the course of the day. So make sure you go to bed with clean, moisturized skin.
The perfect technique: After wetting your face, apply a cleansing foam or gel and create a lather. Gently massage your face to allow the product to work its magic, paying close attention to the forehead, nose and chin, which tend to be oilier for men. Rinse thoroughly to finish.
2
EXFOLIATE
Why? Although this step is often overlooked, exfoliating allows you to deeply clean your skin, unclog pores and get rid of dead skin cells. The result? A smoother, more radiant complexion. The best time to scrub your face is just before shaving, since it will also help stop ingrown hairs.
Bonus: Freshly exfoliated skin will be more receptive to the products applied afterwards, allowing them to better penetrate the skin and work more effectively.
The perfect technique: Two or three times a week, swap your regular cleanser for a facial scrub, applying it to damp skin. Use a gentle touch: the formula’s exfoliating microbeads will scrub the skin to remove dead cells and help prevent ingrown hairs.
3
SHAVE
Why? We recommend shaving after cleansing your skin, since the warm water used to rinse your face will help soften your stubble and open your pores. And if you’ve just exfoliated, that’s even better since it will help you avoid ingrown hairs.
Note: Shaving in the morning will cause less irritation than shaving at night. Why? Because your skin tends to be fresher, less sensitive and less tired in the morning, since it hasn’t been exposed to all of the irritants it encounters in a typical day.
The perfect technique: On a clean (and preferably exfoliated!) face, apply your shaving cream, gel or foam and let it sit for a minute or two to soften your stubble before beginning to shave. Next, shave in the direction of hair growth—never against the grain, which can irritate the skin—and give your blade a good rinse after each pass.
4
MOISTURIZE
Why? Applying a moisturizer (specially formulated for men!) is essential after cleansing the face in the morning and at night to rehydrate the skin, control sebum production and help prevent signs of skin aging.
Note: While moisturizing the skin after cleansing is essential, moisturizing after shaving is even more so. When you’ve finished shaving, apply an aftershave lotion or balm to sooth irritations and hydrate the skin.
The perfect technique: Every morning and again at night, apply a moisturizing cream, lotion or gel to your face after cleansing your skin. After shaving, use an aftershave lotion or balm that is preferably alcohol-free to avoid drying out your skin.
