A guide to anti-aging product ingredients

Vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, AHA, BHA… These ingredients appear widely on the labels of anti-aging skin-care products. But why? And how do they act?  We’ve uncovered their secrets for you!

VITAMIN C (or ascorbic acid)

This vital ingredient has a lengthy resumé! In addition to combating oxidation by neutralizing free radicals in the air, Vitamin C accelerates the production of collagen, controls skin pigments, decreases inflammation and accelerates healing. As a result, it keeps the skin safe from premature aging while preserving its radiance, firmness and elasticity, and helping to decrease the likelihood and intensity of pigment spots, redness and blemishes.

RETINOL

This derivative of Vitamin A works on two levels. First, it helps skin cells renew themselves, which in turn helps create a smoother, firmer skin surface, and second, it stimulates the production of elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid in the dermis (the layer under the skin, which supports the epidermis). That makes it the perfect ally for plumping and strengthening skin.

Caution! Some skin types react poorly to retinol, so be careful when using products that feature this ingredient. Try it on a small area for a short period of time first. Then gradually increase the frequency if all goes well. You should also avoid using two products with retinol in the same treatment.

HYALURONIC ACID

Naturally present in the body, this molecule is like "cement." It acts by filling in the spaces between the collagen and elastin fibers under the epidermis, giving your skin its plump appearance. Care products rich in hyaluronic acid feature different formulas designed to fill in wrinkles and plump up the skin. They also work by compensating for the decline in natural hyaluronic acid that occurs as we get older. One extra bonus is that it works well on all skin types, even the most sensitive!

This cutting-edge hydrating serum offers a concentration of hyaluronic acids and Swiss glacier water whose efficacy has been clinically tested to provide a plumping effect after the very first application. It improves the skin's water balance, optimizes and reconfigures its hydration reserves and fights against the harmful effects of pollution and free radicals, especially those generated by exposure to blue light. Encasing Swiss glacier water in liposomes allows it to more effectively penetrate the skin, resulting in deep, lasting hydration. We take the skin's physiology into account when selecting all our ingredients to ensure optimal compatibility.

AHAs AND BHAs

These naturally occurring acids are often found in chemical exfoliators or peels that are used once or twice weekly. AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids), which include glycolic acid and lactic acid, dissolve dead cells on the surface of the skin, restoring your skin’s natural radiance and improving its texture, while fighting redness, blemishes and early signs of aging. BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) or salicylic acid, works deeply to clean out pores, so it’s good for preventing pimples and blackheads.

These active ingredients can increase your skin's sensitivity to UV rays, so it’s extra important to apply sunscreen after you use a scrub or peel. Either way, proper sun protection is vital at all times to slow the signs of aging!
